Thanks Jane for two great years with the Middlebury Team.

As most of you know Jane will be moving on this year pursuing her teaching and education aspirations. She is working on some leads with private schools and other academic institutions. Coaching is the teaching of ski racing and all of its intricacies. Based on how exceptional of a coach Jane is, I know she will be equal or better in the classroom.
Jane coached both the men and women on our team for the last two years. Her eye on the hill was always right on, her organization was impressive, and her leadership was integral to the team. Really I could go on and on about the numerous things that Jane does so well as a person and a coach. I have coached with quite a few individuals in my years coaching in the east coast, west coast and on the US team. I will honestly and directly say that she is one of the best, if not the best coach I have worked with in my career. I will miss her and the team will also miss her. We wish her the best of luck as she moves into the teaching/education world.
Thanks Jane.

Stever

New Worth Mountain Chair Lift at the Snow Bowl!

New Worth Mountain Chair Lift at the Snow Bowl!
The new Worth Mountain lift will be a fixed-grip, triple-chair transport system engineered and manufactured by Doppelmayr CTEC

Yes it is true. The Snow Bowl will be putting in a new lift this summer/fall. Below are a few comments copied from a letter sent to the faculty and staff by President Liebowitz.

Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
In late spring, we learned that the 40-year-old Worth Mountain double-chair lift at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl no longer meets state licensing requirements. After considering the options—repair the existing lift, replace it, or close the Snow Bowl—I recommended to the Board of Trustees that the best course is to replace the Worth Mountain lift. In making this decision, we weighed the recreational value of the Bowl and its economic importance to the region against purchasing a new lift when we are making significant budget cuts elsewhere at the College due to current economic conditions.
... Continued, Since 1934, the Snow Bowl has been an integral part of our students’ and our community’s winter recreational experience. Countless children, students, faculty, staff, and townspeople have learned to ski at the Bowl and enjoyed the thrill of winter sports over the decades. In recent seasons, the Bowl has recorded annually between 50,000 and 60,000 visits by skiers and snowboarders. Our alpine ski team practices and competes there; the NCAA championships have been held there; and local ski clubs and scholastic teams call it their home mountain. The Snow Bowl is an asset that sets our college apart from other institutions. It also creates dozens of jobs—directly and indirectly—and generates hundreds of thousands of dollars for the local economy via meals, lodging, ski and snowboard equipment rentals and purchases.
The new lift will be a fixed-grip, triple-chair transport system engineered and manufactured by Doppelmayr CTEC, an international firm that has built nearly 14,000 ski lifts in 80 countries. The per-hour capacity of the new lift will be the same as the existing double-chair Poma lift.
The project will require very little site work, as the new lift will follow the same pathway up the Allen trail as the existing Worth Mountain lift. We expect the new lift to be operational in time for this winter’s ski season, as we begin a new chapter in the history of our 75-year-old ski area.

When I fist saw this article my heart sank at the thought of closing the Snow Bowl. I thought that in these economic times that would be the obvious solution. I was so relieved to learn that they are going to replace it.

Dorothy loving the West.

From Montana.....
Summer here is awesome - sunshine until 10:00 pm. I started the summer working at a gift/ice cream shop, which was a pretty big bummer but then a raft company called me up and, halleluja, I'm raft guiding now. So nice to get to work outside in such an amazing place. I'm happy to hear that you're getting yourself out in a boat - swim or no swim. I haven't been boating as much as I'd like but at least I'm out on the water.
There's also some awesome roads to bike on here. I think my dad and brother are going to come up on the 12th of September to do a century ride here. I may make it back there in September but not until after the big ride.
The first pic is from our tree cutting adventures here - we got a permit from the forest service so now we can go take loads of wood out of the forest. Pretty cool to just be able to drive a few miles up a mountain road and just start cutting stuff up. And really frickin fun using a chain saw. :)
The second is from riding up the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park.

Mattie on the Allen at the Middlebury Carnival

Hey Stever-
This week I started working full time at Revision. I am enjoying myself so far. I really like the people and my work will be interesting. I am essentially going to be planning and coordinating the trade shows we go to, which is about 70 a year. I am also working on the e-business side of marketing which is online advertising and social marketing such as Facebook and Twitter. The real-world has been a shock but I am slowly adjusting. I don't have any pictures of me in the eyewear but hopefully I can get you one soon! hope all is well. Enjoy Summer and Happy 4th!!
-Mattie
