Go Midd!
Although I dont have any brilliant photos from todays slalom on the Ross I can share some results and a fine team score heading into tomorrow. Bobby did it again and ended up second for the third time this season. Jon ripped a fast second run and finished eigth. Andrew was consistent in two runs showing great collegiate potential and finished 10th with some great skiing.
For the girls Tasha found some form of old, and finished fourth. Nicole was 11th after a few bobbles each run and Leah was 15th after a 5th in her first run. Nice result Leah in your last carnival slalom.
Great job today team. We are pround of you.

We hoped and held out for the best, but the massive snow followed by warm and rain last night has put us in a situation in which we know we can’t provide a good track on both the Nordic and Alpine venues. The weather forecast listed below also suggests that we will have difficulty running the lift if indeed the winds blow from the east at 50 to 60 mph, regardless of the potential for more snow and rain. We have groomers working on both venues and will do everything we can to provide a quality event. Please adjust your travel and lodging plans accordingly
We apologize for the late notice. The FIS slalom (non-carnival event) previously scheduled for Sunday will be cancelled.

Berntsen Wins Silver Medal
2/23/10 –
Former Middlebury College athlete Hedda Berntsen '99 has earned a silver medal in the Ladies' Ski Cross Freestyle Skiing event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. The Norwegian battled her way through four rounds to advance to the finals, where she finished second only to Ashleigh McIvor of Canada, who earned gold. Berntsen was a member of the alpine skiing team while at Middlebury, also competing for the women's soccer team in the fall.
While at Middlebury Hedda was an All American and went on to capture a World Championship gold in telemark classic in 1997 as well as winning medals in alpine world cups and alpine world championship events. She recently placed second in the X-games skier cross, as well as winning a skier cross world cup in Ocober of 2009.
Middlebury College Carnival : the weekend we've ALL been waiting for

We've been getting a strong feeling of Deja vu around here with all the reports of massive amounts of snow due to hit the bowl this carnival weekend....
Fear not ye loyal Panther fans, there's hard snow up there for the races - we'll just have to work hard to get down to it! Stay pumped because the boys and girls have had some great training up there this weekend and they're ready for a serious showdown!
Panthers that are racing in the EISA Championships this weekend at the Snow Bowl include:
Bobby Poehling
Jake Lund
Jon Hunter
Brian Swartz
Bryan Shpall
Andrew McNealus
Jake threw down in the slalom finishing fourth and collecting another race toward NCAA qualification.
Shrug Your Shoulders and Move On
As anyone who has spent any time around ski racing knows, it is a capricious sport. A promising race or weekend can become disastrous at a moment’s notice, and while I wouldn’t call this weekend’s fifth-place finish at Williams a disaster, it wasn’t what we had hoped for. Bad luck seemed to wait at every turn, but we still weren’t very far from another stellar weekend. That’s how skiing goes; a-word-I-probably-can’t-write-on-the-blog happens.
We did not have our best day of GS on Friday. Sustained gale-force winds howled all day, literally blowing racers backwards out of the start gate, and our girls struggled to find speed all day. Their three scorers were Nicole Dvorak in eight, Lindsay Kraft in fourteenth, and Christine Schozer in twenty-third. The men fared a little bit better, but two second-run hikes marred their day. Bobby Poehling packed it into the fence before struggling out and finishing, and Jake Lund, who had channeled his inner GS skier for a great first run, went down on his hip and had to hike near the bottom of the second leg. Bryan Shpall (12th), Andrew McNealus (13th), and Brian Swartz (21st) were the three scorers.
Saturday was a good day, but for a few hours it looked like it would be a day to remember. The girls had had their struggles, but Nicole was poised to make a run at the podium, and Tasha was within striking distance of the top ten. Jake, Bobby, and Shpall were in the top seven. After the second run, Nicole had moved into third, Jake was in fourth, and Shpall sat in sixth, but Bobby and Tasha had fallen midway down the pitch, taking a chunk out of the team scores. It’s impossible to control everything, especially in slalom, but it’s frustrating to see the shine taken off a potentially brilliant day.
Not meeting our expectations is tough, but dwelling on the past does no good. Williams is over, and Middlebury is next week. We generally have an advantage at the Bowl, and, we’ll work out butts off this week to ensure that we’re ready. As a high-school friend of mine used to say, “Ain’t nothin’ to it, but to do it.”
Nicole was again on the podium in the slalom (3rd). She made a major mistake on the second run and then lit up the bottom to keep her from slipping out of medal contention. Great perseverance Nicole.
